January 11, 2002 - Denver, CO - Denver's MapMart Provides Free Online Access to USGS 3D Data of the Earth's Surface
In a continuing effort to create industry tools, resources and partnerships that provide value to its end-user, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has selected MapMart (http://www.mapmart.com) to participate in its private partnership program for providing free digital data downloads. These high-resolution, three dimensional data models of the earth's surface known as SDTS DEMs (also called Spatial Data Transfer Standard Digital Elevation Models) are used for a variety of purposes including three-dimensional visualization and land surface analysis.
The data are also used by engineers, city planners and others who have an application need for three-dimensional data. Michael Platt, president of IntraSearch Inc., the online initiative's corporate launch pad, says the "new, free DEM data is provided to allow access and speedy downloads for the general public." He went on to say, "MapMart is very pleased to be a private partner distributor of the USGS datasets," and believes "the general public will find the MapMart interface easy to use."
MapMart provides the USGS data at no charge via its Website at www.MapMart.com. The data are being released in the robust Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) format and are available by MapMart in other formats compatible with many popular three-dimensional software applications.

About the USGS
The USGS is a government agency that creates and publishes maps of features and elevations at county, state and national scales. The USGS is the maintenance authority for SDTS and continues to be the technical contact for the data and is responsible for policy regarding data distribution. The decision to provide SDTS DEMs through commercial vendors is consistent with the USGS goal of making more public domain data available at no charge while enabling the private sector to have a greater role in the distribution of USGS data.
As the nation's largest water, earth and biological science and civilian mapping agency, the USGS works in cooperation with more than 2,000 organizations across the country to provide reliable, impartial, scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers. This information is gathered in every state by USGS scientists to minimize the loss of life and property from natural disasters, contribute to the sound conservation, economic and physical development of the nation's natural resources, and enhance the quality of life by monitoring water, biological, energy and mineral resources.
